I've gotta be honest: I never liked their banner for this event, I find it sexist, degrading towards women. Is lipstick the best symbol to represent women that the designers could come up with? C´mon!

But I will not load my guns against Turkey: this is a country which is tryng very hard to support and promote women's chess. The World Championship was held there a few days ago and the European Championship was going to be ground breaking: for the first time in History, an official FIDE Event would offer better prizes for women than the men's event.

Unfortunately, the event has now been cancelled. Why? well, it's hard to say exactly, the president of the Turkish Chess Federation doesn't get along too well with the president of the European Chess Union (basically, the European Chess Federation) and an exchange of nasty emails and a clash with another women's event seems to have triggered this unfortunate turn of events where there's only one victim: women's chess!

I'm not optimistic, but there's still time to remedy the situation, although this time both parties would need to use a bit more diplomacy...
