This book belongs to the "telephone book" type. Endless game links with few explanations. Apart from this, John has chosen to "impose" his own choice of lines, and simply avoids the lines which he doesn't like for black. I must admit that this does have some merits, but not everyone will agree with his choice! If you happen to be one of these persons, tough luck, your line isn't covered! (for example, he claims that the variation: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd 5.cxd d6 6.e4 g6 7.f4 Bg7 8.Bb5 Nbd7 just doesn't work, but doesn't tell you how to refute it, which doesn't say much for a book which is supposed to be a guide). The book does contain some original ideas and assessments, but most of it is just a bunch of game links with some very light notes at the end. Disappointing.
