Javier Posted January 4, 2007 Report Share Posted January 4, 2007 Chess is now considered a sport in 124 countries. The lines which distinguish "mental and physical sport" are very thin. Concepts such as training and preparation, endurance, determination, wearing out and resistance play a major role in chess. Although many of those 124 countries in the world have trouble in coming to terms with the definition of "sport", they all agree that chess is definitely something worth supporting, and that's what usually tips the balance in most countries. Although chess is becoming very popular in Australia at junior level (over 8000 kids took part in the NSW 2006 interschool competitions), the Australian goverment refuses to consider chess a sport. Perhaps now that chess has been officially recognized as a sport in the UK is the time to tackle this issue.
