Ok, I am not exactly a beginner but I have not been playing long. I understand most of the major chess concepts but I beleive my next step is to start studying openings. The only problem is I am not sure what opening to start learning first. I currently am sort of using the Reti but it can be a little more complicated than I am ready for. I would prefer to stay away from gambits if at all possible, they seem a little to risky for me. I would like suggestions on at least one opening for White and one for Black. Thanks for your help.

And btw sorry I did not register but you said no registering with free email accounts and I only have a yahoo account.

In my opinion, the Reti is just too complex an opening system for someone who hasn't been playing for that long, as it is a rather sophisticated system where complex strategical concepts are fairly common.

There isn't a correct answer to your question. It's very much a personal decision. My advice is that you watch some games by a Grandmaster that you like and then choose some opening system from some of the games that he has played. Most Masters and Grandmaster's repertoire are usually the result of many influences: their coaches, Master games that they saw when they were young, books they read... the decision is yours.
