I don't have any conclusion but here goes another theory: With the internet boom worldwide, maybe people who aren't confident with their english started doing their research also in other languages. To see if interest in chess is really declining, i guess one would have do sum "chess" querys but also "ajedrez", "echecs", "xadrez" and so on.
